ER420 is a high-carbon, chromium-rich stainless filler with a typical deposited analysis of Cr ≈12–14%, C ≈0.25–0.40%, Si ≤0.5%, Mn ≤0.6%, Ni ≤0.6%, and Mo ≤0.75%, while keeping P/S levels low. Thanks to its air- or heat-treatable nature, the deposited weld metal can achieve impressive strengths, with tensile figures often reported in the range of 830–1000 MPa (120,000–145,000 psi) and yield strengths typically several hundred MPa lower. Elongation can vary between 30–45%, depending on the welding parameters and heat treatment applied. The mechanical performance is highly influenced by the welding process and post-weld heat treatment.
