Stainless Steel 316 is an austenitic alloy that typically contains about 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum, with carbon levels reaching up to ~0.08%. The addition of molybdenum enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to 304. For 316 tubing, you can expect mechanical properties like tensile strength in the range of ~515–750 MPa, yield strength around 205–310 MPa, and elongation of about 35–45%, depending on the finish and cold work. This alloy boasts good ductility, excellent toughness, reliable weldability, and consistent performance across a broad temperature spectrum.

316 tubing is the go-to choice when corrosion resistance and hygiene are paramount. It’s commonly specified for pharmaceutical and food processing lines, chemical transfer piping, marine and coastal systems, desalination and water-treatment plants, heat exchangers, HVAC chillers, and sanitary instrumentation tubing. Additionally, it finds applications in architectural handrails, medical devices, and automotive exhaust components, especially in environments exposed to salt spray or acidic conditions. Opt for 316 when 304 might not hold up against chlorides or mild acids; for more extreme chloride exposure or very high
